Your guide to immune health in Truckee. Stop the cold and flu!


So we are going into cold and flu season and you want to reduce your changes and the severity of a cold.Here is what you gotta do.

Flu, cold

  1. Wash your hands and get your loved ones to wash there hands.

  2. Decrease your stress. That's physical stress like doing to much work and mental stress like be overwhelmed with the holidays.

  3. Laugh as much as possible

  4. Lower your carb and sugar intake. Be merciless with looking at the carbohydrate content of all your foods and eating the lowest you can. Of course get rid of/ reduce the junk foods.

  5. Get to know the glycemic index. This a measure of how fast sugar comes into the blood stream from the stomach and has a direct effect on how carbohydrates affect our health

  6. Take a probiotic like lactobicillis . These gut bugs are important to our health and taking them improves the function of the immune system and might even reduce our chances of getting diseases like cancer and diabetes to name a few.

  7. Eat more fermented foods. See the above for the aliments that are helped by fermented foods. As the father of medicine Hippocrates said 1000 years ago, "let food be thy medicine". We get these good for us bugs in all these great foods. The ones we can get easily in Truckee are yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, pickles not packed in vinegar, tempeh, miso, kombucha and some cheeses like cheddar, cottage, gouda and mozzarella

  8. Rest

  9. Don't overeat. Take smaller portions and don't go back for seconds

  10. Wash your nose and sinuses with either a Neti pot or nasal wash bottle

  11. Get body work like massage, chiropractic and acupuncture

  12. Watch your alcohol consumption. You will digest your food better and eat less if you wait until after eating to have an adult beverage

  13. Plan for less junk at holiday parties. Most people lose control at parties. So bring a healthy dish and eat a healthy snack before going.

  14. Exercise moderately
